There was a lightness and clarity to the performance which made the contrapuntal thinking, for once and at once, obvious. Here was a Große Fuge with real transparency. And saying that verges on the oxymoronic. There was also a projection of wit and lyricism in some of the episodes, hitherto, to us at least, obscure.”
